What you see here is a Texas vehicle registration sticker that expired in 2016. It’s too bad that I took the photo the other day of a car on my street. What I really don’t get is why this car hasn’t been ticketed until the owner does something about it. It doesn’t pass the current state inspection. Without a passing inspection, it can’t get a new registration sticker.

I might believe that if it was a month or two out of date, but a year and a half stretches belief.

Enforcement is just bad down here. I don’t get it either, even if the sticker isn’t noticed, presumably any time it gets scanned by a license plate reader, it’s setting of some notification to the officer? Maybe they don’t get as much money as they do pulling over speeders?

Lack of inspection is bad (and safety inspection is going away, though places with emissions testing will still have that), but I also tend to assume that any car with expired registration also doesn’t have insurance.

Actually...

When I posted this I went looking for the new legislation on the safety inspections, and it never made it to final vote. So no, the inspections won’t be going away until at least 2020, and then only if they manage to get a new bill into vote in 2019. Personally I hope the inspection requirement doesn’t go away, I see entirely too many unsafe vehicles as it is, it’ll only get worse without the inspections.

I once saw a set of tags on a Corvette in MD that expired in 1989. The Corvette in question was a C5.

Notice stickers? This being the 21st century, is there no digital system? If I don’t get my car inspected in time (+ a few days) and I don’t suspend the license I get a fine, automatically in the mail.

Illinois is much of the same way. I drove my 453 without license plates of any kind for a year and never got a ticket despite being tailed by police on many occasions.

I’ve also driven my 451 on expired plates for longer than a year. Illinois does colour coding so it’s crazy obvious mine were expired. Again, nothing.

I’ve even swapped my 451’s license plate around the cars. Again, nothing.

A few months ago I asked a police officer what they could see when they run a plate through their computer. They can basically see everything (model year, make/model, inspection date, sticker date, owner demographics, etc). So I guess it’s just selective policing. They won’t stop you for just an expired plate, they want to get you for speeding, plus an expired plate.

Yeah, I don’t know what happens here. When I moved to TX, NY was on top of things enough to complain about my insurance being cancelled. I’d assume TX would do something as well, but things are weird down here.

And like I said, I’d expect all these things to be tied into the license plate reader systems, so that if a cop drives by one of these things in the wild, they can ticket them (I suppose you could just send tickets automatically as well).

Nope. Doesn’t happen in Texas. I’m not sure why not though, we have all of the pieces to make it work.
